Should Gareth Southgate field his England side with a three-man defence as expected at the World Cup, the wing-back slots will be amongst the most important positions on the pitch. They require not only the energy and power to marshal an entire flank single-handed, but also the nous and the quality to make a difference at both ends.

With Kyle Walker seemingly set for a centre-back berth in the back three, Southgate has given himself two options to choose from for the right-hand side; Tottenham’s Kieran Trippier, who started there in England’s last two friendlies, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who awaits his first senior Three Lions cap but has just come to the end of a fantastic season at Liverpool.

With that in mind, we posed a selection question to our England readers earlier this week, asking whether the 5 foot 9 Reds youngster or the Spurs full-back should start at right wing-back once the tournament in Russia is underway.

And our poll has revealed that Three Lions supporters are split almost down the middle; while 51% would stick with Trippier following his friendly performances, 49% would dump the Tottenham man from the starting XI and give Alexander-Arnold the nod instead.
