According to the French forward has emerged as an option for United, with his performances having caught the attention of Old Trafford scouts in his last three English top-flight outings. Since the start of the year, Mateta has been in sensational form, netting eight goals in as many Premier League games, including a brace against United at Old Trafford, which has further boosted his stock among the club hierarchy.

While Gyokeres remains a primary target for United boss Ruben Amorim, securing the Swedish international’s signature appears to be a difficult task. The Sporting Lisbon forward, who previously thrived under Amorim’s guidance, has made it clear that he prefers a move to a Champions League club. With United currently struggling in the bottom half of the Premier League standings, a spot among the continent's elites seems to be a distant dream unless they can clinch the Europa League title.

Mateta's versatility, physicality, and work rate have convinced Amorim’s recruitment team that he could seamlessly fit into the manager’s preferred 3-4-3 system. His ability to hold up play, run the channels, and provide a physical presence in the box makes him an ideal candidate for United, who are in dire need of a consistent goal threat.
United made a £72 million investment in Rasmus Hojlund in 2023, but the Danish forward has managed just 23 goals in 78 appearances across all competitions. Similarly, Joshua Zirkzee, who arrived for £36.5 million, has struggled to make an impact, contributing just six goals in 41 appearances since his arrival.

According to Palace could demand around £50m for Mateta, whereas pursuing Gyokeres will likely be a costlier affair. However, it is apparent that another significant financial outlay is required in the summer, as they have been one of the least prolific teams in the division with just 34 strikes so far. Addressing the issue will be a top priority for Amorim, and signing a proven striker will be key to turning their fortunes around.
