Messi did return to the Miami team in their 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Union – as he bagged a brace and an assist in that contest – but was named among the substitutes for a trip to Georgia. The 37-year-old was introduced in the 61st minute, as he replaced USMNT star Julian Gressel, much to the delight of a home support that also saw the all-time great sit out a visit to Atlanta last season.
WHAT MORALES SAID
Morales told reporters after the game: “Messi always looks good, and tonight was no exception. He played almost 30 minutes, where he looked active. He had chances at goal, so like always his performance was positive for the team.”

Expanding on why Messi was left out of Tata Martino’s starting XI – with Luis Suarez and Jordi Alba also being rested – Morales added: “We have three games this week and various players suspended so for this game Tata Martino and the coaching staff thought this was the perfect team to face Atlanta. I thought it was a good decision, since we almost took home the three points.”
